Abstract: To meet the needs of information warfare for the Revolution in Military Affairs(RMA), networked weapon system platforms become a development trend of Network Centric Warfare (NCW). The battlefield wireless sensor networks have attracted much attention of the world's military powers. Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology allows several users to share the same frequency channel by dividing the signal into different time slots, and it is widely used in the wireless communication for its reliability and stability. Considering the lightweight and low-power requirements of the communication protocol for battlefield wireless sensor networks, the principles and difficulties in the applications of TDMA communication protocol are analyzed in the aspects of hardware and software separately. A low-power TDMA communication protocol for battlefield environments is designed and implemented with MSP430F449 mixed signal microcontroller and CC2500 low-cost 2.4GHz RF transceiver. The battlefield wireless sensor network nodes platform and the implementation of the low-power communication protocol are discussed in detail. The experimental results have verified the reliability, scalability and flexibility of the protocol. Also, it is shown to require a small amount of codes and to stay in a low-power state when there is no wireless communication data. Thus, it is suitable for various low-power wireless sensor network applications.
