Mental health literacy is a much studied factor, as might influence the mental health. It refers to the knowledge, the behavior and the awareness that helps to maintain and promote the mental health. The survey of the mental health literacy of scientific and technological professionals may serve as a reference for policy-making. In 2017, the mental health knowledge survey (n=13305) was conducted on scientific and technological professionals by investigation stations. In 2018, the survey (n=2531) was conducted with Mental Health Literacy questionnaire through online web. The survey results show that the mental health literacy of scientific and technological professionals is relatively better than that of average people. However, there exists a significant difference in their command of mental health knowledge. There are group differences in the mental health literacy of scientific and technological professionals. It is shown that female's mental health literacy level is higher than that of the male, the 25~44 age group has higher levels than other age groups. The higher the education level, the higher the level of the mental health literacy, those with master's degree and doctor's degree have the highest level, those with educations of high school and technical secondary school have the lowest level. With regard to the regional differences, those in the eastern region have the highest level, followed by those in the northeast, the west, and then the central regions. First-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen show better results than other provincial capitals, municipalities directly under the central government and county-level cities. With regard to the occupational difference, teaching staff have the highest level, followed by professional and technical staff, and finally, health technical staff.

Scientific and technological professionals are the main power for the innovation and the development of China. The mental health is the base of being innovative and achieving their full potential. To study the mental health of Chinese scientific and technological professionals, three surveys were conducted in the years of 2009, 2014 and 2017, respectively. The results are as follows. About 1/5 scientific and technological professionals had depressive symptoms, 11.2% had the suicide ideation in the past year, and 48.1% suffered varying degrees of anxiety. The male professionals had higher level of depression than the female professionals. The young and middle-aged professionals had higher level of anxiety than the elder age groups. The demands for the mental health of scientific and technological professionals mainly include the emotional regulation, the interpersonal skills, the parenting of children, the career guidance, the marriage and family, and the treatment and prevention of the mental disorders. Scientific and technological professionals had scruples and misunderstandings about mental health services, with resistance in using mental health services and seeking professional help. Meanwhile, the resources of mental health services for the scientific and technological professionals were still very limited. Most of the professionals (67.2%) felt that they were unable to access to the mental health service conveniently. Overally, the present mental health service system is still unsystematic and insufficient, and cannot meet the demands of Chinese scientific and technological professionals. Therefore, the specific mental health service system for scientific and technological professionals should be implemented and strengthened. Meanwhile, the knowledge of the mental health should be popularized.

To investigate the effects of work-family spillover on the physical and mental health of scientists and technicians, a total of 14, 165 scientific and technical workers participated in the present study. The work-family interaction questionnaire, the Chinese Psychological Health Inventory (CPHI), CESD and the Pittsburgh sleep quality questionnaire (PSQI) were used to examine the mental health, the depression and the sleep quality. The structural equation model shows that 1) the work-family spillover significantly predicts the mental health index, the depression and the sleep problems; 2) although male scientists and technicians have higher level of work-family conflict, they benefit more from the positive work-family spillover, and female scientists and technicians are more affected by the negative workfamily spillover. In conclusion, the positive spillover of work family is beneficial to the health of body and mind, the negative spillover is harmful to the mental health, the depression and the sleep quality. Male workers benefit more from the positive work family spillover, while female workers suffer from the negative work family spillover.

As the main force of scientific research, young scientific and technological professionals take up major work tasks and pressures, with more mental health risks. The present paper studies the mental health status of young scientific and technological professionals and the influencing factors by conducting two rounds of large-scale investigation of participants aged 35 and below in 2009 and 2017. The results show that 21% of young scientific and technological professionals have different levels of depression, 47.9% of them have different levels of anxiety, and 11% have suicidal ideation in the last year. Young scientific and technological professionals are more prone to depression and suicidal ideation than other age groups, but there is no significant difference in anxiety levels. Female and low-educated young scientific and technological professionals are more prone to suicidal ideations, and the low-educated group are also more prone to depression. Marital status, marital satisfaction, emotional regulation style, and working environment significantly affect the mental health of the studied group.

A sample questionnaire survey of 403 employees in a number of IT companies and a case study of an IT company show that IT workers are high-stress, high-anxiety, high-happiness, low-depression, and low-burnout. The main sources of stress are the characteristics of the work itself, such as the workload, and the career development. In terms of demographic factors affecting the physical and mental health, the age and the marriage status have an impact on the physical and mental health:36-40 year old employees are in a state of high stress, low physical and mental health, low happiness; for the married employees or those with stable contacts with friends, their stress, physical and mental health, and their happiness level are better than those of divorced or unconnected employees. With regard to the personal personality, type A personality has a negative impact on the mental health. Optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy all have a positive impact on the mental health. With regard to external factors, interpersonal relationships and organizational environments have a positive impact on the mental health. The better the organizational atmosphere, the lower the employee's sense of stress, the better the physical and mental health, and the higher the happiness sense.

In order to study the status quo of mental health of medical and health workers, 1463 medical and health worker samples are selected from the data of mental health survey of science and technology workers in 2017, and 1441 other scientific and technological workers are selected as the control group. The results of the survey show that the risk of depression among medical workers is lower than that of the control group. The anxiety and the suicidal ideation are not significantly different from the control group. The job burnout and the emotional exhaustion are significantly higher than those of the control group. In the way of the emotional regulation, the suppression group shows more risk of depression and anxiety. At the same time, health care workers have problems with insufficient sleep time, insufficient number and duration of exercises, and long working hours. In mental health services, health care workers are better than the control group. In order to promote the construction of world-class societies and promote the mastering of specialized knowledge and ocupational capability for professional personnel in science and technology societies, the present study surveys the psychological state of full-time staff in the societies affiliated to China Association for Science and Technology. A total of 557 valid questionnaires were distributed and collected. They were compiled with Depression Scale of Center for Epidemiologic Studies, Career Satisfaction Scale, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Psychological Capital Scale and other instruments. Through data analysis, it is shown that the depression and the anxiety are common among the full-time staff of the societies, with the detection rate of 18.9% for the depression, 30.8% for the mild anxiety, and 18.9% for the moderate to severe anxiety. The full-time staff is relatively satisfied with their career. Career satisfaction, job involvement and career commitment vary significantly among different positions and income levels. Multiple regression analysis shows that both internal and external factors have a significant influence on the psychological state of the full-time staff. The regression coefficients of the emotional regulation and the job characteristics on the anxiety and the depression are significant, the cognitive reappraisal significantly reduces the level of depression and anxiety. The higher the job requirements, the higher the level of depression and anxiety; the higher the level of the decision-making autonomy, the lower the level of depression and anxiety. Psychological capital and job requirements have significant regression coefficients on the career satisfaction, the job involvement and the occupational commitment, among which the interpersonal psychological capital can positively predict the career satisfaction. Skill development has a significant impact on all three indicators:the more the opportunities for skill development, the better the work attitude. Excessive job requirements reduce the occupational commitment and the career satisfaction. The present study suggests that to improve the emotional health and work state of the full-time staff of the societies, attention should be paid to both the improvement of the working environment and the psychological selection and training of the staff. In contrast, the mental health status and the work attitude of lower rank personnel need special attention and support.
