    A brief review is given of the transformation of Science and Technology Review since July 2004; it includes publishing original papers, expanding the information capacity, increasing the publishing frequency, layout design innovation efforts, and trying to form its own characteristics. Over the past three years, many academicians of CAS and CAE have contributed to, or given counsel for, or expressed advocacy of subscriptions to the journal. Their touching stories are introduced. The future direction of the journal is also prospected.

    Rice cropping around Tai Lake faces again with various oppugns and criticisms from the government and the academic circles worldwide. As the largest managed wetland system in the world, in fact, the paddy ecosystem has highly integrated service functions. With a summary of related researches and the field surveys of rice production, this paper discusses the integrated functions of the paddy ecosystem in Jiangsu around Tai Lake based on the author's long-term research on paddy ecosystems. It is shown that, under appropriate management regimes of rice-cropping, the paddy ecosystem not only helps climate regulation, atmospheric quality improvement and water and soil conservation, but also provides tremendous direct and indirect economic benefits through rice production around Taihu Lake area. Sustainable rice production can make a great contribution to city-rural harmonization and social harmonious development. People's bias on rice cropping around Tai Lake should be corrected. Based on a scientific planning of paddy field layout, with new techniques for conservational rice cropping and incentive policies of household production, the functions of paddy ecosystem may be enhanced to guarantee food security, environmental health and economic sustainable growth.

    Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is the most destructive disease for potato. The R10 gene for resisting potato late blight has a broad resistance spectrum and is widely used in breeding programs. R10, like R3a cloned, is a member of major late blight resistance complex and locates on the short arm of chromosome 11. A segregating population of 195 genotypes is inoculated and analyzed. A single dominant gene is identified in the R10 differential where the P. infestans isolate 89148-9 is avirulent. Six markers linked to R10 are developed using a combined strategy of comparative genomics and bulked segregant analysis. R10 resides between the two PCR markers 1001T and C2_At5g59960 that define a genetic interval of 2.6 cM, telomeric to the cloned R3a gene. The genetic map obtained may be used for molecular isolation of the R10 gene via positional cloning and comparative genomics.

    Based on the mechanical and electrical coupling in EME of coal or rock and the statistical theory of damage mechanics, a coupling model for EME of coal or rock is established in this paper, which is a modification of a previous model, based on the simulation study on Weibull morphological parameter m. The value of m and EME for different coal or rock samples are simulated by using the modified coupling model, and the results agree well with experimental values.

    Thrombin as a hemostatic drug can be extracted from blood. Because there are more than 100 plasma proteins in blood, it is natural for thrombin to contain some plasma proteins. α-2 macroglobulin is one of the important plasma proteins and it can pavilion and protect trypsin. Soybean trypsin inhibitors are used to inactivate the trypsin that can not be pavilioned, and then the activity of α-2 macroglobulin included in the thrombin mixture is detected by using the special substance-BAPNA. It shows that the thrombin extracted from blood does contain the α-2 macroglobulin. This work provides some guidance for thrombin purification.

    In this paper, GPS-based mobile measurement system is introduced including the hardware and the architecture of the system based on Internet/Intranet. The measurement system has bee applied in Australian Network and successfully extracted the oscillatory frequency and damming values of the power system. Results from the analysis show that the angle measurement system is able to be used to record the variation of phase angle of the power system thus to carry out the post-event analysis of the incident of the power system successfully and extracting oscillation of the system in real-time.

    The air temperature in Northeast China Region, the base of China's heavy industry, has raised significantly since the 50's of the 20th century. For an analysis on the causes, Northeast China Region is divided into 29 districts by Thiessen Polygon Program. At the same time, the mean annual temperature in each sampling position is taken to represent the temperature of each district. Then the variation of the mean annual temperature of each sampling position is analyzed from 1951 to 1998 and the increasing rate of air temperature in the 29 districts is obtained through least squares method. Finally, a special subject diagram is created, which reflects different prospective increasing rate of mean annual temperature in the 29 districts. It is shown that the increasing rate of air temperature in some districts is significantly different from those of the others, and that the more human activities there are, more greenhouse gas that mankind has released and more industrialized the region is, the more significantly the temperature of the region is raised. However, the increasing rate of the regional air temperature is much redused near the ocean.

    Numerical order cognition is one of the most important parts of numerical cognition. Research shows that it has its roots both in evolution and individual's development, and has similar behavioral effects as numerical magnitude cognition. But they are associated with different spatio-temporal courses in parietal and prefrontal cortices. It is inconclusive as to whether the numerical order cognition and the numerical quantity cognition are related with some common underlying mechanisms, or they are related with (at least partially) distinct processes.

    The gravity field resource of the Earth is very important to the advancement of geodesy, space science, geophysics, geodynamics, oceanography, resource exploration and modern military science. With an introduction to the theory of airborne gravimetry, the principle and key technologies of airborne gravimetry based on strapdown inertial navigation system are reviewed, and the technological basis of airborne gravimetry in China is specially addressed.
