This article reviewed some important discoveries and achievements in the field of condensed matter physics in 2016. Some examples, such as electron negative refraction, half-quantum vortices and Majorana Fermion, are given to represent low-dimensional quantum systems, correlated systems, topological systems, bandgap regulation, and quantum information.

Review the research hotspots of particle physics, improve the measurement accuracy and accumulated a large number of data in Higgs physics and new physics. In Neutrino physics, the measurement accuracy of θ13 improved to 4%. low energy strong interaction physics confirmed 5 quark states, also found a number of possible 4 quark state dark matter search direction, and fully depressed WIMP particles and other types of cross section of dark matter particles with the interaction of ordinary matter.

Physical oceanography a science driven by the combination of ocean observation, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Owing to coordinative observations and advanced numerical simulations, some advances were made in physical oceanography in 2016 This paper reviews some key progresses in the fields of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, the interaction between western boundary currents and mesoscale eddies and the turbulent mixing of thermocline. This paper also briefs some hot events of oceanography including the successful construction of a mooring array in the tropical western Pacific by China and the pilot application of new-generation Argo floats.

The live and fresh characteristics of life and the complexity of the laws of its activities make any new discoveries to attract worldwide attention. Research advances in the field of life sciences in 2016 have been soul-stirring. This paper selects several cases from the research results, which are too numerous to enumerate, to review the typical study progress in this year. The selected cases are:cancer cell induced death of endothelial cells, new type of ectopic inhibitor against drug resistance gene mutation lung cancers, gene targeting scheme that may greatly reduce off-targeting phenomenon, accurate tumor-killing therapy using modified T cells with dual receptor high efficient tumor immunological, therapy, high efficient AIDS immunological therapy, with HIV universal effect anti-virus antibodies, the therapy of autoimmune diseases with the removal of lymphocytes which attacking the patients' own tissues, as well as the crystal regeneration innovation, the resolution of the mechanism of synaptic pruning. Extraordinarily, the problems of tumor treatment, gene editing and so on, have maintained a constant heat, and in 2016, outstanding achievements were still made.

The year of 2016 witnessed a number of research frontier advances in paleontology, including discoveries of the earliest fossil records (e.g., 3.7 Ga stromatolites, 1.56 Ga macro-multicellular orgasms, and new Ediacaran animals described), meticulously preserved feathered dinosaur tails and special insects in ambers, new Silurian fishes, Early Devonian plant root system, and ancient DNA revealing archaic modern human's genetic input to the Neanderthals, among others. It is noted that prominent contributions were made by Chinese paleontologists.

2016 was an important year for cancer control in China. This report presents the progress and achievements in cancer prevention including environment management,smoking control, obesity prevention, health insurance of serious illness, annual check-up; the major achievements in the treatment of lung cancer, leukemia, breast cancer, gistrointestinal cancer and nasopharrengeal cancer; as well as developments of new anticancer agents, immune treatment and construction of translational research platforms. The perspective of cancer prevention and treatment in the near future is also briefly discussed.

In 2016, the global pharmaceutical market size reached more than 1 trillion US dollars. In spite of the rise of pharmaceutical research & development cost and the decline of approval number of small molecular drugs, the research and development of anti-tumor drugs and orphan drugs remained robust last year. On the other hand, with the coming patent cliff of biological products, biosimilars were emerging. In this paper, we select some of the blockbusters in 2016, covering the frontiers of drug development for anti-infection, antitumor, central nervous system and other areas, and provide a review of 2016 domestic hotspots in pharmaceutical industry.
