    One purpose of scientific research is often considered as how it can be applied to commercialization, however, an equally important (if not more) consequence of research is the ability for researchers to think scientifically. This is especially important for Macao, a highly developed capitalistic gaming city. Since its return to China in 1999, the Macao government and the public community at large have made tremendous efforts to initiate scientific research and have implemented legal, organizational, and resource measures to systematically support scientific research. Today's Macao has attracted research talents and achieved new productivity in research and development. While the investment of scientific research by Macao has not yet resulted in a large-scale high-tech industry, the development of scientific research has certainly helped Macao residents, particularly the younger generation, to pursue long-term prosperity and stability for Macao.

    Public safety is the base of national security and social stability and is important for ensuring national modernization development. The Chinese public safety technology has obtained obvious progress owing to the high attention of government, especially the support of National Medium and Long-term Plan for Science and Technology Development (2006-2020). This paper describes the Chinese public safety technology development, chances and challenges. Besides, the technology used and achievements obtained by Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) after Typhoon Hato are presented.

    Currently Macao SAR is well-developed, which was handed over to Mainland China 20 years ago. However, this has led to the rapid increase of transportaions, which has in turn caused the serious traffic problem in Macao. In this paper, the traffic problem is analyzed, which includes the situation of buses, motorcycles, and taxes. The current situation of light rail, roundabout, excavation, and cross-sea-bridge is introduced and its influence on the traffic is discussed. Solutions to the traffic problem is proposed regarding to city plan and smart city strategies. Moreover, the future transportation development of Macao is also studied.

    Developing smart buildings is of great importance to the sustainable and healthy development of cities. In this paper, we firstly provide some definitions and features of smart buildings. Then, we describe the building characteristics of Macao. Finally, we provide some suggestions for smart building development in Macao, e.g., strengthening cyber security protection for building management systems, speeding up the deployment of 5G networks, and developing energy conservation and environmental protection technologies for buildings.

    Marine economy is a new area of the world economy. Macao is a geographic-narrow city with dense people. How to develop, maintain and realize the marine economy has always been concerned. This paper analyzes the marine economy development situation in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and studies the opportunities and challenges faced by the marine economy development in Macao. In order to achieve economic growth, regional coordination, industrial optimization and financial development, we follow the vision of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development to propose a high-quality development path of marine economy based on the opportunities and challenges for Macao to accelerate the implementation of marine economy sustainable development.

    The 85 km2 of sea area that the Chinese central government has empowered the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region to manage provides a strong support for the moderately development of Macao's economy. This paper discusses the importance of the sea to Macao's moderately diversified economic development in terms of expanding development space, providing resources, supporting industries, and promoting cooperation. It also analyzes the development foundation of Macao's related industries, the policy advantages of the central government in supporting Macao's development of the marine industries, Macao's own "free economy", and the "bridge" advantages of Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa. Based on this, the paper puts forward a strategic path to promote the diversified development of Macao's economy through the sea:to connect with national development strategy and the local social and economic development needs, to make two plans for the development of Macao's sea area and industry; to establish the marine cooperation platform with three regions:Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, southern marine economic circle urban agglomeration, and Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa through regional linkage.

    Shortage of talents in Macao has caused great constraints on Macao's deep participation in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In the article we discusse the need for Macao to participate in and contribute to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and its new requirements for Macao's talent operation. We analyze the main causes of the shortage, including endogenous shortage, poor structure, conservative talent immigration policies, etc. Then we comb the efforts made by Macao SAR government to solve this problem. Finally, we put forward five suggestions, namely, formulating a long-term talent development plan, establishing a talent sharing mechanism in the Greater Bay Area, optimizing the introduction system of professionals, increasing local talent cultivation and overseas talent return, and reforming talent operation institutions and mechanisms.

    The paper overviews Macao's development of innovative technology in the 20 years since it returned to China, and evaluates the ability ranking of innovative technology of Macao in the global city system and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area based on the evaluation index system. The study discovers that there is still significant room for Macao to improve its development ranking of innovative technology. The current problem lies in the insufficiency of industrialization of technology, which is mainly caused by the insufficiency of achievement conversion function of scientific research platform, lack of enterprises with innovation ability, low proportion of R&D with respect to GDP, and lack of profession institutions with science and technology management function. This paper puts forward the countermeasures to promote the development of innovative technology and industry of Macao, such as combining with the construction of international technology innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, focusing on innovative technology, strengthening scientific research platform function, cultivation and introduction of scientific research talents, stimulating innovation vitality with financial market, setting technology innovation bureau to coordinate the development of innovative technology and industrialization, and expanding the fields of innovative technology.

    The government of Macao Special Administrative Region has launched the youth entrepreneurship assistance program to support the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in Macao for six years. Based on the analysis of the process of Macao's youth entrepreneurship and taking the Macao Youth Entrepreneurship Incubation Center established in 2015 as an example, this paper discusses how to optimize the Macao's entrepreneurship incubation system and looks into development prospects of youth entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.

    Macao's economic development is facing multiple opportunities and challenges. This paper discusses the necessity of the development of Macao's science and technology industry, the existing problems in the development of Macao's science and technology industry, and the characteristics of the new material industry. Taking Zhuhai Nakin Technology Co., Ltd. as an example, it puts forward that the new material industry is an important development direction of Macao's diversification.

    Late as they started to develop, the sci-tech societies of Macao has experienced a fast development process, from sporadic low-level development before return to rapid and diversified development after reunification. Currently the types of them are still not complete, the relevant area of science and technology coverage is limited, and the distribution among different types is unbalanced. However their activities have already covered a wide range of fields, from academic exchanges, scientific research, popular science to talent education, rights maintenance and policy participation. They also undertake a variety of social functions. The sci-tech societies of Macao are established in accordance with law, they implement self-management and have high professional authority and social recognition.

    Macao has a special position in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay area. This paper expounds several platforms in Macao, including art and craft museums of Portuguese speaking countries, personnel exchange visits and cooperation planning platforms between state key laboratories and academic circles in Portuguese speaking countries. It is suggested to cooperate with Brazil in asteroid exploration research and to establish an international center for applied mathematics.

    In the context of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development, Macao's role in China's opening up and development has transferred from "the precise connector" to "the precise bonnecting function". Exerting and promoting "the precise connecting function" is an important part of Macao's long-term development strategy, and is the fundamental assurance of "nation's needs, Macao's specialities" and practice of "one country, two systems" in China's new development era. To meet the challenges from land, industries, regional cooperation, talents and so forth, Macao needs to strengthen the advantages and regional coordination, and to exert strategy of precise connection, precise striving, precise governance and smart growth. By doing so, Macao can promote "the precise connecting function" to a high level, comprehensively and deeply participate in the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and can connect to national development.
