Systems biology is the study of the interactions between the components of a biological system, and how these interactions give rise to the functions and behavior of that system. In this paper, we give a brief review on the recent studies on systems biology is gived, by stressing on interactions, dynamics, networks and integration (including data sources and technologies), in particular, from the perspective of engineering viewpoint.

The Integrated Simulation Support Platform (ISSP) is based on the simulation technologies of complex large-scale systems, and it supports modeling, cooperation simulation and virtual test. The numerical modeling support technology simplifies large-scale system modeling. Using the simulation database, a complex system can be splitted into several sub-systems and these sub-systems can associate with each other in real time. With the virtual test technology, the simulation validation can be done in a test environment. These technologies are integrated into ISSP, making it user-friendly.

In traditional Chinese medical literature, Purslane has been used in the treatment of diabetes. The effects of lowering blood glucose level and rehabilitating morphological pancreas islets were observed on mice in our study. The rich n-3 fatty acid content in purslane may play an important role.

Variability of vegetation is one of the important indices for regional eco-environment. The variation of vegetation during a certain number of years directly reflects the variability trend of vegetation eco-environment with time. On the basis of previous researches and the quantitative remote sensing results, in this paper the variability trend of NDVI from 1982 to 2004 in Ningxia area is studied by using GIMMS NDVI data and MODIS data. According to the result, the variability trend of NDVI in most areas was in rising from 1982-1999. However, due to less diverted water volume of the Yellow River, the NDVI was in declining after 2000.

The recent progresses in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics are summarized and an attempt is made to build a new descriptive method based on a new variational principle. By employing Maximum Flux Principle, as modified Hamilton principle for open systems, a new statistical ensemble is developed and a new potential function is defined. Then the Langevin equation and the renormalization equation are obtained, through which the fractal structure is ultimately derived. A new framework of statistical mechanics is therefore outlined. With an example of quantitative analysis of urban system, it shows advantages and potentialities in dealing with universal open complex systems.

A multi-keyword model and its transferred model are built in this paper for the problem of Adword Auction. The algorithm is discussed with respect to the objective function, constraint conditions and the generation of random numbers. Some results are presented in the cases of numerous keywords and a limited number of keywords.

A Novel Joint Source Channel Coding

In this paper, based on the concept of adaption, the Cost-Evaluating Symmetrical Reversible Variable Length Codes (C-E SRVLCs), which can be used for Joint Source Channel Coding (JSCC), are constructed through a user-defined cost function. The principle of C-E SRVLCs is explained and analyzed, and simulations are carried out for two common channels(BSC and AWGN). The results show that the codes are superior to the traditional separate codes, and may found applications in some areas.

In a test of the sand physical model, it is very important to select the model sand with appropriate physical and kinetic characteristics, which is directly related with the similarity of the sediment movement and the change of river bed and with the accuracy of the experimental results. All available model sands are not satisfactory in one way or another. In this paper, a kind of hydrophilic resin compound model sand (PS or EPS) is successfully developed, whose physical characteristics can be controlled and which can be produced in bulk. This new hydrophilic resin sand (PS or EPS) can meet various requirements in the model sand selection.

A Comparison of Eco-city Construction Capability Between Xuzhou and Lianyungang

This paper proposes an eco-city index system by considering the practical features of Xuzhou and Lianyungang, which is then used in a quantitative analysis of correlation and generalized principal components for the eco-city construction and in a comparison of eco-city construction level between Xuzhou and Lianyungang from 1995 to 2004. The study indicates that the economic and social ecosystems in Xuzhou and Lianyungang see a rapid development from 1995 to 2004 and the situation in Xuzhou is better than in Lianyungang, but the environmental ecosystems of the two cities see a decline at first and then a rise, and the situation in Xuzhou is worse than that in Lianyungang. It may be concluded that the whole level of eco-city construction of Lianyungang is better than that of Xuzhou.

Non-commercial forest compensation tactics and how to alleviate the problem of compensation fund insufficiency are discussed in the paper. Advantage, disadvantage and feasibility of various compensation standards for non-commercial forest are analyzed. At present, one must raise more funds and increase supply to deal with the insufficiency of compensation funds for non-commercial forest. Meanwhile, it is important to decrease the demands for compensation funds. In that respect, the compensation scope and method are discussed, and it is suggested that sapling forest be put out of compensation scope, and a lease fee be paid in place of compensation. The conclusion may be applied to non-commercial forest protection in China.

Based on C-D production function and the steady development theory of economy, an empirical analysis is made on the sustainable development of agriculture in Wuqi county. The conclusion is that the development of Wuqi agriculture has been based on the policy of reforestation from some cultivated land, the use of rich labor force and the development of agricultural technology, therefore, it is sustainable and may serve as an example for the development of western areas of China.

On Effective Exploitation of Achievements in Science and Technology in China

n recent years, many important scientific papers in China are submitted for publication overseas in international journals indexed by SCI. While it helps to promote international academic exchanges, it adds some difficulty for Chinese scientists to access these achievements in the earliest possible time and makes Chinese journals of science and technology hard to raise their level. In this paper, some suggestions are made on how to deal with such situations, including enacting some regulations about publishing papers by the government, setting down some rules about secondary publications, and starting special columns in Chinese journals to introduce these achievements.
